Grandma's Christmas Candy – A Recipe from Hickory Bridge Farm
Hickory Bridge Farm is a Gettysburg area restaurant and bed & breakfast that serves mouth-watering, homestyle food that always brings a sense of nostalgia, so we knew that we’d find the perfect sweet recipe to make for this time of the year in their cookbook.
Grandma’s Christmas Candy is not only a tasty treat, it’s a cherished family recipe – one that has been passed down to 2nd generation owner Mary Lynn Martin from her mother. It’s easy to make – no baking required, and combines a variety of delicious flavors – the cooked butter and sugar create a sweet, crunchy toffee that’s topped with luscious chocolate and toasty almonds. This candy would be perfect for including in a holiday spread, or for wrapping up and gifting to those you love this holiday season.
Recipe:
1 cup butter
3 tablespoons water
1 1/3 cup sugar
1 tablespoon light corn syrup
1 cup chopped, toasted almonds
1 (6 ounce) milk chocolate bar
Melt butter in large saucepan. Add sugar, corn syrup and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it reaches beyond hard crack stage, approximately 350 degrees. Quickly stir in 3/4 cup of the almonds and pour onto buttered cookie sheet. Spread mixture out until thin. Break chocolate bar into pieces and place on hot candy. When chocolate is melted, spread over candy and sprinkle with remaining toasted almonds. Cool and break into pieces.
